Bread and Puppet Theater
August 4 @ 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm
The Bread and Puppet Theater is a politically radical puppet theater, active since the 1960s on the lower east side of Manhattan and currently based in Glover, Vermont. Its founder and director is Peter Schumann. The name Bread & Puppet is derived from the theater’s practice of sharing its own fresh bread with the audience of each performance to create community, and from its central principle art should be as basic as bread to life.
The theater is located on 753 Heights Road (Rt. 122) in Glover, VT. It’s about 90 minutes from Quimby Country, but the drive passes some truly spectacular scenery, such as Lake Willoughby. Performances are every Sunday afternoon at 3 pm, July 7th to August 25. Get there half an hour early for “Dingdongs” in the circus field. Performances are free, but donations are welcome.
The Museum is a massive accumulation of the puppets, masks, paintings and graphics used by the Bread and Puppet Theater. Housed in a 150-year-old barn, the museum is open from 10 am to 6 pm. every day. Phone: 802-525-3031 for more information.
